Where to go and when

Tags:

If you have started reading this then you are interested in knowing a bit about surfing, surfing spots along the west coast of Cape Town, South Africa or you are interested in finding out how you can get involved in surfing in Cape Town.

My Name is Trevor Kemp and I have been surfing for about 22 years and been in the surfing industry for 13 years. I own a Surf Store in the West Coast Village in Sunningdale, Table view, Cape Town.

Surfing

The best thing you can ever do is go surfing! For me it’s something which I will never give up and which I have put a lot of time and effort into but have got 10 times back with regards to the enjoyment, lifestyle, fitness and the places you see and the people you meet. If you get into surfing it will get you hooked, you look at weather and the ocean differently, you plan trips along the sea where there are “surfable” beaches, you leave the washing, the mowing of the lawn, the cleaning, the cars and even the birth of your child to head to the beach when the surf is “cranking”

Learning To Surf

One of the best most fun things you can do. Here at Sunset Surf we offer a great “Learn To Surf” program. We have full-time qualified instructors who are patient and knowledgeable about the sport and places up and down our coast to visit and surf. We offer absolute beginner classes to intermediate classes. All equipment is supplied , so all you need is sun block a towel and a great positive attitude. We also offer Surfing Parties, group lessons and individual lessons (one on one with our instructor).

All lessons are done between BloubergBeach and MelkbosBeach along the west coast of Cape Town. We are also affiliated with the BIG BAY LIFESAVING CLUB where we have full access to all the facilities which offer save place to leave valuables and changing facilities as well as a well deserved warm shower after the lessons.

Surf spots and great beaches

There are some great white sand beaches from Blouberg beach to Melkbos beach, a distance of 17km, with some even better surfing spots.

Blouberg Beach

Starting at the Wreck of the Selli 1 which has now been removed- in front of the round-a-bout at the beach end of Blouberg Road and stretching to the start of a small hill. This beach offers some great surfing on the right day- it needs light East to SE winds with low tide and a WSW to SW swell direction. Also a favorite spot along this stretch is a surf spot called Doodles- named because of the beach bar opposite the surf spot.

Big Bay

A great learning ground for all surfers, bodyboarders and SUP’s. This beach attracts beginners, intermediates as well as advanced surfers.

Works best in SE to East winds and SSW swell and can work in all tides

Horse Trails

This is a less crowded surf spot for the more advanced surfers and likes SW swell and no wind to a light Easterly can work well on high tide.

Then there is a collection of small surf spots and reefs all the way to Melkbos.

Eerstesteen

Gated entrance. Advanced surfers. Low tide no wind and moderate size SW swell.

Tweedesteen

You would drive by if you weren’t looking for it. A small two car side parking off beach road about 1km from Eerstesteen, direction Melkbos. Similar conditions needed as Eerstesteen.

Derdesteen

A more popular beach break. Low Tide , Medium size SW swell with light East to SE winds. Advanced beach break which can also handle some big swell 6-8ft max

Kreeftebaai

A combination of sand and reef. Low tide. No wind to light easterlies. Advanced surfing spot. Entry and exit of the water can be tricky.

Hakgat

Left point break starting on reef and ending on sand. Advance surfers only. Can be a tricky paddle out. Likes Mid to low tide with good size SW to WEST swell. Can handle large clean surf. Can sometimes handle a breezy to strong SE winds.

Holbaai

Another beach break which likes low tide and medium size surf in no wind to light SE.

Melkbos

A small town up from Table View 12km North. This spot also has a variety of good surf spots and has some good surf in our windy summers.

So there was a list of some of the more popular surf spots along the small stretch of coast line and roughly what are the ideal conditions needed for best surf.

Hope this helps and please don’t hesitate to pop in or give us a call for any information regarding surfing, bodyboarding or skating

Regards,
Trevor Kemp
